When thinking of someone who had a reason to feel shame and guilt, I think back to the story of King David in 2nd Samuel 11. King David had slipped so far down into sin and he didn’t even realize how far he had gone. He cheated on another man’s wife, got her pregnant, tried to cover it up and then had some of his best warriors fighting in his army murdered in the process.
When King David's sins were brought out to the light, could you even imagine how hopeless David felt on the inside? David had a lot of shame, guilt and even depression that he had to fight.
The problem with sin is that it becomes a trap that keeps us from experiencing the true freedom of God.
However, do you know the first thing that David did when his sin was brought to the light? The first thing he did was go to God and repent. He chose to turn from his sin and turn toward God and ask him for forgiveness. From that moment on, the power of sin was broken on David’s life and the power of shame and guilt began to weaken.
